Iran’s ‘Gabriel’ wins Karama HRFF’s best short film award


‘Gabriel’ by Iranian director Yousef Kargar won the award for the best short film at Karama Human Rights Film Festival, also known as Karama HRFF or Karama Festival, in Jordan.


The film took part in the competition section of the 11th edition of the festival, where it competed with movies from France, Lebanon, Canada, Spain, Egypt, Colombia, Iraq, Morocco, Belgium and Syria and was declared the winner by the fest’s jury panel, comprising jurors from Scotland, Jordan and Lebanon, IRNA reported.


The event was held in Amman during December 27, 2020-January 7, 2021.


“Gabriel is a middle-aged man who lives with his son. His wife has been lost for some time. All the people are suspicious about her. One day, news comes to him and he has to choose one: Expediency or conscience,” reads a synopsis of the film provided by karamafestival.org.


‘Gabriel’ had earlier participated in a number of international film festivals in Ireland, the US and Turkey. It has won the awards for the best film and best cinematography from the Berkeley Video and Film Festival (October 31-November 1, 2020) in the US and the prize for the best film from Italy’s Parma Film Festival (September 14-20, 2020).


The cast include Yousef Yazdani, Shabnam Yousefi, Ali Mokarram, Sina Faramarz, Manzar Asghari and Rasoul Omranifar.


Karama Festival is a six day film festival which has annually been held in Amman, Jordan, since 2010.
