Six Iranian ICHs inscribed on UNESCO’s list over eight years

Six Iranian intangible cultural heritages (ICHs) were inscribed on UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists over the past eight years.


The total number Iran’s ICHs inscribed on this list stands at 16, IRNA reported.


According to national and international definitions, an ICH is a practice, representation, expression, knowledge, or skill considered by UNESCO to be part of a place’s cultural heritage.


Buildings, historic places, monuments and artifacts are physical intellectual wealth. Intangible heritages consist of nonphysical intellectual wealth, such as folklore, customs, beliefs, traditions, knowledge and languages.


Iranian intangible cultural heritages includes performing arts, traditional and handmade crafts, skills associated with traditional and handmade crafts, social traditions, customs, festivities and rituals, science and customs associated with the nature and world, verbal traditions and other manifestations like languages and dialects.


The Iranian ICHs inscribed on UNESCO’s list include: The traditional skills of crafting and playing the Dotar (2019), the art of crafting and playing with the Kamancheh/Kamancha (2017), Chogan, a horse-riding game accompanied by music and storytelling (2017), flatbread making and sharing culture: Lavash, Katyrma, Jupka, Yufka (2016), Norouz (2016), Qalisuyan rituals of Mashad-e Ardehal in Kasan (2012), Naqqali, Iranian dramatic storytelling (2011), traditional skills of building and sailing Iranian Lenj boats in the Persian Gulf (2011), music of the Bakhshis of Khorasan (2010), Pahlevani and Zoorkhanei rituals (2010), ritual dramatic art of Ta’ziye (2010), traditional skills of carpet weaving in Fars (2010), traditional skills of carpet weaving in Kashan (2010) and Radif of Iranian music (2009).
